When competitive inhibitors compete with the substrate for a spot in the active site of the enzyme. Binds with enzyme to form EI complex

• $\displaystyle K_{m}$ increases
  • It's harder to reach half $\displaystyle v_{\text{max}}$ because other competing inhibitors prevent access to the active site
• $\displaystyle v_{\text{max}}$ unaffected
  • With high enough $\displaystyle [S]$, you can achieve $\displaystyle v_{\text{max}}$
