• $\displaystyle G$ or sometimes $\displaystyle \mu$ is the shear modulus
• $\displaystyle \gamma$ is the shear strain
  

$\displaystyle \tau=\frac{T\rho}{J}$

• $\displaystyle T$ is the torque applied to a rod
• $\displaystyle \rho$ is the distance from the center of the rod
• $\displaystyle J$ is the polar moment of intertia
